We visit during the first four to six weeks after a patient’s discharge from hospital. Our volunteers are committed to visiting once a week but it could be more often depending on the patient’s needs and the availability of the volunteer. The length of time of each visit depends on what is involved, but on average would only take an hour or two. Some requests may be a one off.
The services most requested are shopping and befriending. We provide a wide and varied range of help, however this does not include any nursing or cleaning. For a full list of the help our volunteers provide see the Home Page.
The first step is to complete the application form by clicking the button below. When we have received this, we will write to your two references and arrange for you to come for an informal interview. Before you join us a volunteer we will also need to carry out a Criminal Records check via the DBS service which is usually just a formality.
In order to meet the requirements of the CRB check you will be required to provide evidence of at least 5 years residency in the UK, and you will need to have a good command of English in order to be able to communicate fully with clients and colleagues. If you speak any additional language(s), that will be useful as well to help residents in Birmingham that come from a wide variety of diverse nations and backgrounds!
You will be accompanied on at least your first visit you make by one of our experienced workers but after that you will be working on your own with the back up support of the Welcome Home Service co-ordinators. We pay per mile for travelling expenses and reimburse phone calls.
