We Are Here To Help

You can find us 4 hospitals around Birmingham and Sandwell.

What we do

Our team of volunteers and support staff provide a range of support including

  • Befriending
  • Emotional support
  • Benefits advice
  • to attend medical appointments
  • Help with correspondence and form filling
  • Fetch shopping and/or prescriptions
  • Provide a food parcel on the day of discharge for patients who have no one to shop for them
  • Go to the bank or post office
  • Accompaniment to hospital, doctor, the optician or hairdresser
  • Give benefits advice
  • Help sort out bills and other paperwork that may have gathered during the hospital visit
  • Liaise with a wide range of statutory, voluntary and commercial services on your behalf
  • Provide respite care for a couple of hours
  • Arrange for furniture to be moved within the house
  • Make arrangements for pets to be re-homed or temporarily cared for
In addition, we provide a sitting-in service for carers, plus a cleaning and handyman service. The support is for six weeks and it is free of charge. The service is available to all Birmingham and Sandwell residents, who have been in hospital. We receive referrals from medical professionals, social workers and from patients or their families.

We want you

In order to grow our service and keep up with demand we are on the lookout for more volunteers to help us. Our volunteers come from all backgrounds and with all levels of experience. Volunteers are most commonly involved in befriending and shopping, but they can get involved in other aspects of the support should they wish.

Following DBS checks and training, we match volunteers with a service user, who they support for an hour each week for a six-week period. Visits can be more frequent if the volunteer feels able to commit to this. At the end of the period of support, the volunteer can take a break, or be matched with another service user. It is important that volunteers commit to the six-week period so that the support provided is reliable and consistent. Click below for more information…
